Soft baits

Five parts so far: the main kinds of soft bait, how to rig them (Texas, Carolina, wacky, drop shot and jig head), how to choose size, color and scent, how to store and organize them, and three baits from our own tackle box.

  1. Soft baits: the main kinds and what each one does: Lesson one: worms, stick baits, craws, creature baits, swimbaits, jerkbaits, grubs, tubes and trailers, how each moves, and which hook and rig it usually goes with.
  2. Rigging soft baits: Texas, Carolina, wacky, drop shot and jig head: Lesson two: how the five most common soft bait rigs are built, which hook and weight each wants, and how each is fished, with typical numbers.
  3. Choosing a soft bait: size, color and scent: Lesson three: how to pick a size for the water and the cover, a simple way to choose a color from water clarity, and what the research says about scent and taste.
  4. Storing and organizing soft baits: Lesson four: how to sort a pile of soft plastics by type and color, bag and label it, and pack only what the water calls for.
  5. Soft plastics from our tackle box: a fluke, a floating worm and a flip-and-drop swimbait: Three soft baits, three jobs: a split-tail soft jerkbait you twitch, a floating worm you fish weightless, and a flat-sided sunfish swimbait you flip and drop into cover.
