Which Texas fishing license should you buy? Packages, one-day and year-from-purchase
Buying a Texas fishing license looks harder than it is. There is one license, and TPWD sells it mostly as a package: the license plus the endorsement for the kind of water you fish. Pick the package by where you fish and how often, and the price follows. This page lines up the choices so you can see them together.
General information from the TPWD pages listed at the bottom, read on the date shown. It is not legal advice. Prices and rules change with each license year (September 1 to August 31), so check TPWD or the checkout page before you buy.
Three words to know
- License: the basic permission to fish public water in Texas. Most adults need one.
- Endorsement: an add-on that says which water you may fish, fresh or salt. TPWD lists the freshwater and saltwater endorsements as separate items.
- Package: TPWD's bundle of the license and the endorsement or endorsements. A saltwater package also carries a red drum tag, a spotted seatrout tag, or both, depending on the package.
What the Texas resident packages cost
These are TPWD's prices for a Texas resident aged 17 to 64, for the license year that began September 1, 2026. Each one runs from the day you buy it through August 31, whichever year that is.
- Freshwater package: $30. Fishing license plus the freshwater endorsement. A saltwater endorsement can be added.
- Saltwater package: $35. Fishing license plus the saltwater endorsement and its tags. A freshwater endorsement can be added.
- All-Water package: $40. Covers both kinds of water.
- Year-from-Purchase All-Water package: $47, residents only. Runs from the day you buy it through the end of that month in the next license year.
One day, or a lake that crosses a state line
- One-Day All-Water license: $11 for a resident. It covers the day or days you choose, and you can buy consecutive days at once. No endorsement is needed. TPWD says one red drum tag and one spotted seatrout tag come with it at no extra charge, limited to one of each per customer.
- Lake Texoma license: $12. It lets you fish both the Texas and Oklahoma sides of Lake Texoma with no other Texas or Oklahoma license, it is good through December 31 after you buy it, and it is good only on Texoma.
How to choose, using TPWD's prices
The arithmetic below is ours, built from the prices above. It is not a TPWD recommendation.
- Fishing once or twice a year. For an adult resident, two one-day licenses cost $22, less than any package. Three cost $33, which is more than the $30 freshwater package.
- Freshwater only, three or more days a year. The $30 Freshwater package beats buying one-day licenses once you pass two days.
- Saltwater only. Three one-day licenses cost $33, still under the $35 Saltwater package. The fourth day tips it the other way.
- Both kinds of water. Four one-day licenses cost $44, so the $40 All-Water package is cheaper from the fourth day on.
- Buying late in the license year. A regular package ends August 31 whenever you buy it. A July purchase gives you about two months of fishing. Outside September, the Year-from-Purchase package costs $7 more than the regular All-Water package and lasts about a year.
If you will fish only the one lake, remember Texoma has its own $12 license. If you fish Texas public water elsewhere too, a package is the better buy.
If you hold a lifetime license
TPWD sells three resident lifetime licenses: a Combination Hunting and Fishing license, a Hunting license and a Fishing license. A new lifetime holder gets a lifetime card, and TPWD prints the holder's customer number on the back. That number retrieves your account in the license system, so keep the card where you can read it. TPWD shows what the cards look like on its License Samples page, and says the 2026-2027 licenses carry green TPWD logos.
Where to buy
TPWD sells licenses online at txfgsales.com and through retailers it lists. A few licenses, such as the resident all-water guide licenses and the sport oyster boat licenses, are sold only at TPWD offices.
